Before you do anything — Make a backup

Don't forget to back up your data. If you have synced the device with a Google account, then the contacts, calendar, Gmail, & select other Google-related data will not be lost and will come back after the next sync. However, you should backup anything you want to keep that is not stored on the SD card:

It would also be a good idea to backup everything stored on the SD card in the rare case the SD card must be formatted to resolve any major problems.

MyBackup Root, SMS Backup & Restore, and Call Backup & Restore are all free applications that can assist with backing up your data.

Installing the ClockworkMod Recovery

Warning: Installing a custom recovery image on the HP Touchpad will void the warranty.
  1. You will need Novacom on the computer to proceed thru this process. Follow the webOS SDK guide, to get Novacom on the computer.
NOTE: The webOS SDK is sufficient. VirtualBox is only needed to install the webOS PDK Toolset (which isn't needed). Virtualbox is needed if the computer is running OS X.
  2. Download the ACME Installer, MOBoot & the ClockworkMod Recovery:
    • ACME Installer: Download
      md5: 7b49b53a9d70315c40dccde9fc20e7a9
    • MOBoot 0.3.5: Download
      SHA1: 32eb4a65f47cc586f5b728afe502b93ff63592f8
    • ClockworkMod Recovery: Download
      md5: 1308300f38685d44afde730efd9132cc
  3. Copy the ACME Installer into the same folder as Novacom.
NOTE: On Windows, this is most likely be C:\Program Files\Palm, Inc. or C:\Program Files\HP webOS. On OS X, this is most likely be opt/nova/bin.
  4. Connect the HP Touchpad to the computer via USB.
  5. Once connected, tap the alert to enable Mass Storage Mode on the HP Touchpad.
  6. Copy the ClockworkMod Recovery & MOBoot zips into a folder in the root directory of the HP Touchpad called "cminstall" which you have to create.
  7. Turn the HP Touchpad off.
  8. Hold down the "Power" and Volume Up button until an USB symbol appears on the screen.
  9. Once the computer recognizes the HP Touchpad, open terminal and navigate to the directory Novacom is in.
  10. In the terminal on the computer and run the following command:
    novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller3
  11. It is possible that novacom says: "failed to connect to server" especially if you just installed it. In that case, you have to run novacomd before. novacomd can be run from '/opt/Palm/novacom/novacomd' or similar.
  12. The ClockworkMod Recovery & MOBoot should now be installed on the HP Touchpad.

Flashing CyanogenMod

The first time installing CyanogenMod it is recommended to install via the ACME Installer. All sequential installs after that, it is recommended to install/update CyanogneMod via recovery. 7. Once the installation finishes, the HP Touchpad should automatically boot directly into CyanogenMod.
